چکیده

Spring diet of the pine marten in Sardinia, Italy.— Knowledge of a carnivore’s foraging behaviour is essential to understand its ecology. The pine marten Martes martes is commonly defined as an opportunistic generalist predator since its diet in Europe includes mammals, fruits, birds and invertebrates. Based on faecal analyses, we evaluated spring feeding habits and trophic niche breadth of the pine marten in a Mediterranean landscape on the island of Sardinia (Central Italy). The most important source of food for the pine marten was small mammals (mainly Apodemus sylvaticus, Mus musculus and Eliomys quercinus), accounting for 52% of the percent mean volume. Important secondary foods were invertebrates (mainly beetles and insect larvae) and birds (almost exclusively passerines), whereas large mammals, lagomorphs, reptiles and fruits made little con tribution to the diet. The diet composition and the Levins’ index value suggest that the pine marten in Sardinia behaves as a facultative specialist predator, with a specialization towards small mammals.

Anatomical Study of Extrinsic and Some Intrinsic Muscles of the Thoracic Limb in Iranian Pine Marten (Martes Martes): A Case Report

The study of myology is relevant for both functional understanding and distinguishing different species. The pine marten (Martes martes) is a small carnivore found in Europe and Western Asia and belongs to the Mustelidae family. For the purpose of this study, fresh a carcass which was found in the hunters' trap, was brought to the anatomy hall of veterinary faculty, for anatomical studies. Afte...

Modelling the Distribution of Forest-Dependent Species in Human-Dominated Landscapes: Patterns for the Pine Marten in Intensively Cultivated Lowlands

In recent years, the "forest-specialist" pine marten Martes martes has been reported to also occur also in largely fragmented, lowland landscapes of north-western Italy. The colonization of such an apparently unsuitable area provided the opportunity for investigating pine marten ecological requirements and predicting its potential south- and eastwards expansion. We collected available pine mart...

Occurrence and Seasonal Variation of Nitrate in Natural Waters of Sardinia (italy)

Nitrate in surface (187 samples) and ground (126 samples) waters collected in Sardinia (Italy) shows a large range of concentrations: from <1 to 249 mg/L. The highest median value of nitrate occurs in groundwater samples, especially in shallow wells, and spring waters circulating in granite environments. In surface waters, nitrate generally increases as flow increases following intense precipit...

Ramification of Celiac artery in the pine marten (Martes martes)

The pine marten (Martes martes) is a medium sized carnivore rarely found in Iran. The aim of this study was to describe species-specific characteristics of the celiac artery in pine marten. In pine marten examined in this study, it was observed that the celiac artery originated from the ventral aspect of abdominal aorta. The celiac artery was divided into two branches. A thick branch was the co...

The enemy of my enemy is my friend: native pine marten recovery reverses the decline of the red squirrel by suppressing grey squirrel populations

Shared enemies may instigate or modify competitive interactions between species. The dis-equilibrium caused by non-native species introductions has revealed that the outcome of such indirect interactions can often be dramatic. However, studies of enemy-mediated competition mostly consider the impact of a single enemy, despite species being embedded in complex networks of interactions. Here, we ...
